Model Engineering - Whats the attraction?

Most Model Engineers derive a great deal of enjoyment from overcoming the many problems they face whilst creating a model of something that they admire in full size. This is often done in workshops having the bare minimum of equipment.

What do I need to start in this hobby?

There are two things that are absolutely essential. The enthusiasm for a project and the perseverance to see it through, armed with these two qualities there is little that cannot be achieved.

OK, but what are the equipment requirements?

This isn't an easy question to answer, it depends on the size of the work you intend to do, and how much you want to do by hand. A centre lathe large enough for the work you intend to do is essential. As are a 150--200mm bench grinder and drill press fitted with a 12mm chuck. An assortment of hand tools will also be required most of which can be purchased second hand.

Some measuring equipment, a bench fitted with a solid vice and the space to set it all up round off what is required to get started in this hobby.

Those machines sound expensive, I may not stick at this hobby, where will that leave me?

Most Model Engineers acquire their workshops over many years, starting out with the basic hand tools purchasing the more expensive items as their skill and enthusiasm builds. If bought wisely and looked after the contents of a Model Engineers workshop
hold their value very well.

Those machines are for skilled workers, I don't know one end of a lathe from the other!

A large number of Model Engineers are not from engineering backgrounds, The Auckland Society of Model Engineers has members from all walks of life. The newcomer to this hobby can get any help he needs in acquiring the skills needed, our members are only too willing to help.
